Ohioans spent $22M on marijuana in week leading up to 420 holiday
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - New data from the Ohio Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) shows Ohioans spent $22,022,865 on marijuana in the week leading up to 4/20, the unofficial weed holiday.
The DCC reports the revenue weekly from purchases across the state. During the period from 4/12 to 4/19, 294,431 total sales were made, with the average cost of a manufactured sale at $25.76.
Recreational marijuana is taxed at 10% in Ohio, with $16M spent on recreational during that period, the State took in $1.61M in taxes.
Overall, marijuana has been big business in Ohio. In total, $2,607,967,793 has been spent on marijuana. Almost $500M is non-medical with more than $2B being medical.
Adult-use recreational cannabis is taxed as follows:
- 36% to the Cannabis Social Equity and Jobs Fund: Used for social equity and job initiatives.
- 36% to the Host Community Cannabis Fund: Benefits municipal corporations or townships with adult use dispensaries.
- 25% to the Substance Abuse and Addiction Fund: Supports substance abuse and addiction services.
- 3% to the Division of Cannabis Control and Tax Commissioner Fund: Supports the operations of the Division of Cannabis Control and covers the tax administration costs.
Medical sales began in January 2019 while recreational sales began in August 2024.
