Chico State announced its continued prohibition of marijuana on campus Thursday.

In an email to the campus community, Milton Lang, Vice President of Student Affairs, stated that marijuana remains prohibited on all Chico State property and all university events. This prohibition will remain despite California’s Proposition 64, which legalizes the growth, possession, use, and sale of recreational marijuana in the state, that went into effect Jan. 1.

Federal law requires measures by all California State University campuses to prevent the use of illegal drugs including marijuana as defined under the federal Controlled Substances Act.

“If we are unable to do so, we lose eligibility for federal financial aid for students as well as federal grants and contracts,” Lang stated in the email.

According to Lang, all faculty, staff and students should be aware they may be subject to disciplinary action for use of unlawful drugs such as marijuana.

Chico State adopted a smoke-free policy in August 2017. All smoking is prohibited in indoor and outdoor spaces.
