Red Wing Woman Enters Guilty Plea in Zumbrota Shooting Case

Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News)  - There has been another guilty plea in a case connected to a shooting in Zumbrota in December. 18-year-old Payton Koob entered into a plea agreement today in Goodhue County Court and admitted to a felony count of conspiracy to commit simple robbery. In exchange, a more serious first-degree burglary charge and two counts of aiding an offender filed against the Red Wing woman were dismissed.

The criminal complaint alleged Koob and another woman had gone to a residence in Zumbrota seeking to purchase some marijuana from a man living in the home when three males showed up and apparently tried to steal the seller’s stash of the drug. He responded by chasing them outside, where a fight erupted and the man ended up being shot in the arm. It remains unclear if the victim was intentionally shot or if the shooting was accidental.

Zumbrota police reported the three males and the two women fled from the scene but were apprehended. Charges were filed against the three males and Koob, who was accused of being involved in the plot to steal the victim’s marijuana.

One of the males, 17-year-old Dantel Ruth, who was accused of being the person who brought the gun to the botched robbery, earlier pleaded guilty to a simple robbery charge in juvenile court and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Koob’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place on June 20th.
